Other theories propose that the fine needles used in acupuncture may block neuronal pathways and thereby prevent pain. Additional studies have shown that the insertion of acupuncture needles stimulates the brain's regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones thus affecting key systems in the body including the nervous, endocrine and immune systems.
